A discussion of internalized bias wouldn’t be complete without a discussion of body image.  Thought I’d remind us of a silent group in mental health, trauma, and eating disorders.

― Reality Bites (1994) Lelaina: I was really gonna be something by the age of 23. Troy: Honey, all you have to be by the age of 23 is yourself.

This just hit so hard, right in the feels.

What do you do when you can't take it anymore

Answer:

urbancatfitters:

a lot of my coping mechanisms are very unhealthy, but some that i recommend are such things as

  • taking a hot shower
  • sitting on the floor and listening to music
  • curling up into the fetal position on your bed until you fall asleep
  • taking a walk
  • taking three very slow deep breaths
  • writing in a journal or a blog, or both
  • talking to a friend, talking to yourself
  • eating some food that you like
  • reading a book
  • tearing a piece of notebook paper into very small pieces
  • watching a sad movie and crying harder than you probably should

There are more people with eating disorders than there are with green eyes

You have more chance of surviving certain cancers than you do an eating disorder

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate out of any psychiatric illness, largely due to heart failure or suicide

Now tell me it’s a lifestyle choice, a diet, “just a phase”.

And these deaths don’t only happen to thin people
They can happen to ANYONE with an eating disorder

A girl at school struggling with anorexia told me today, “I’d always wanted to be the skinny friend. But now that I’m skinny, I don’t have any friends.” And this, here, is the reality of eating disorders.
